China stands as one of the world’s leading economies, a global manufacturing hub, a major superpower, and much more. Less widely known, however, is its role as the primary producer of critical minerals essential for the green transition. This strategic position gives China significant influence over the global shift toward a more sustainable, greener economy. Moreover, China’s desire to expand its control over raw metals to sustain its dominant position is clear. To this end, China strongly supports the development of deep seabed mining, both within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and in international waters. Chinese subsidiaries currently hold five exploration permits from the International Seabed Authority (ISA). It would be no exaggeration to say that China is the leading superpower advocating for the deep seabed mining industry today.
